The Canadian Home Builders Association of BC offers two certification programs for builders in the province. The Residentail Housing Professional (RHP) and Certified Residential Builder (CRB) certifications are available to individuals or businesses, respectively, who have completed the six courses below. Financial Management - This course is designed to teach business owners in the construction industry, with no training in accounting or finance, how to monitor the financial condition of the businesses. Topics covered include understanding and analyzing Balance Sheets and Income Statements; Profit Planning and Cash Budgeting; forecasting Cash Flow; managing growth; and dealing with financial sources and bankers. Estimated time to complete the online portion of this course is 8-10 hours plus an assignment that must be emailed to the instructor prior to the one-day in-class session.
Construction Law - This course is designed to boost a builder's knowledge of the law as it relates to construction projects, contracts and legal relationships. Some of the topics it covers include techniques to eliminate holdback conflicts; minimizing disputes; dealing with change of work orders; ways to collect debt quickly; the Builders' Lien Act; differences betweek standard contracts and legal liability of the builder. Estimated time to complete the online portion of this course is 10-12 hours plus an assignment that must be emailed to the instructor prior to the one day in class session.
Built Green™ Builder Training - This course covers building science issues and sound building practices. Topic covered include secrets to preventing condensation and moisture movement; cost effective ventilation solutions; advanced framing techniques that save money; new air barrier materials and methods; and simple ways to tap into an exciting promotional campaign.
Project Management and Site Supervision - This course teaches techniques for planning and scheduling complex projects involving many people and for staying on schedule until a project is completed. Course contect includes traits of Successful Project Managers; keeping your team on schedule; proven cost control techniques; administrative tasks of Project Managers and smart site planning to save time and money. Extimated time to complete the online portion of this course is 8-10 hours plus an assignment that must be emailed to the instructor prior to the one-day in-class session.
BC Building Code - Single Family Dwellings - This course addresses dozens of common questions and misconceptions about the Building Code and gives specific advice on how to use the code properly. Topics covered include quickly finding the information you need; discussing code issues with building officials; inspecting buildings for code compliance and boosting your knowledge of acceptable materials, systems and methods used in the housing industry. Estimated time to complete the online portion of this course is 20-25 hours plus an assignment that must be emailed to the instructor prior to the one-day in-class session.
Marketing and Project Sales - This course is designed to help businesses created an effective Sales and Marketing strategy to achieve the end result of satisfied customers who "sing their praises:. Concepts covered include preparing a marketing plan and budget; using market research to stay ahead of the competition; selecting your marketing team; producing winning promotional materials and result-oriented advertisements.
